Hubba Da Whaa???

on April 11th, 2005 ( 15 )

You may be noticing some changes! How very keen of you.

Everything will be in a giant big mess for a couple days. Stuff will be broken, complaints will be filed, etc. Don’t even try to navigate to any of the other pages cept home… hehe…

Here are some notes:

A new system of content vs. excerpts. The blog will display the first post in full form and the rest in excerpted. What do you think?

This will be big on customization. I’m hoping to allow user-customization of colors, backgrounds, fixed vs. liquid, and choosing your own modules (calendar, last 5 posts, archives, categories, etc.).

Eventually, I’ll have a shoutbox for you to bitch at me from, but for now, here is fine :-D

Ooh look at me I’m smiling

on March 9th, 2005 ( 1 )

Buy me! There has been an invasion of smiling people! Have you ever noticed how many websites use images of perfect, happy, smiling people to advertise their website? I’m sure you have. They portray to the visitor that they are a friendly company, a company that you can depend on, etc. I, however, am proud to say that I have developed an immunity to such garbage. I have seen so many of these sites it drives me nuts. For one thing, these smiling people have nothing to do with the company. I can guarantee you that the actual people don’t even work for the company.

These pictures are called Stock Images, and they suck. There is a whole market for this. The pictures are taken, posted to a stock website, then bought by enterprising companies that want smiling people on their website. Anyways, they are made to appeal to the dumb people who think “Well this smiling person likes their product, so I probably will too!” Just say no.

On another note, I’ve made some spam improvements. I doubt any spammer will ever make it past this! Here’s what I did: I added a text field when you try to make a comment, with a question that asks “Are you a spammer?” If you type in ‘no’ or ‘No’ or ‘nO’ then you are set. This only will show for people who aren’t logged in. If you aren’t a registered user, consider registering, it’ll spare you writing “no” in every time.

Distributed Computing

on January 15th, 2005 ( 4 )

Recently, about a month ago, I discovered something called Distributed Computing. Distributed computing is a program (well not really a program) that runs on one’s computer that uses one’s idle CPU time. Or in other words, takes the wasted power of one’s CPU and uses it for something else. Thus one’s computers extra stuff doesn’t go wasted.

There are many different kinds of distributed computing; mostly all of them are you volunteer for. The real point of distributed computing is to create a super computer without the cost of one. I recently started to volunteer the free CPU time of my computers to a project called grid.org in junction with United Devices; this program does scientific research for diseases and research about humans. This is important because it is quite possible that this could lead to a discovery of something very important, like it has before.

There is another distributed computing program called SETI, I am much less interested in SETI because: SETI looks for extraterrestrial life by analyzing signals from space. I feel that with the current stage humanity is in, we should be fixing problems or figuring things out on our own planet before we try to see what other “aliens” are doing elsewhere.

I encourage anyone that’s interested to take a look at grid.org and see what you think, and possibly contribute to the cause, since it doesn’t actually cost you anything. This program is fairly easy to install, but if your computer skills are extremely limited, I’d advise you to get someone who knows what they’re doing to help you. ;-)

Quite Possibly the dumbest “hacker” ever

on December 30th, 2004 ( 8 )

Hey all…boy I’ve got a great story for you all today. It all started around 1 AM last night when I got IMed by some idiot….and we had the following conversation (slightly abridged for clarity):

tudude91: hey
harcserf: hi
tudude91: im on the new aim express
tudude91: its better then normal aim
harcserf: who is this?
tudude91: you can sign on different sns at once
tudude91: try it
tudude91: www.aim.cjb.net
harcserf: pff no
tudude91: w/e fag
harcserf: its obviously not AIM
harcserf: its a password farm
tudude91: why not?
tudude91: ?
harcserf: im not an idiot
tudude91: yes you are
harcserf: you enter your password so that whoever owns the site can mess with your account or whatever
harcserf: AIM doesnt have frames on their site
tudude91: looks like your a fuckin genius at html
tudude91: and
tudude91: ive already stolen 4 accounts
tudude91: including this one
tudude91: LOL
harcserf: damn i wish i could fuck u up :)
tudude91: lol
harcserf: ya…i a genius at html….
tudude91: im srry
tudude91: but im uber l33t at evertying
harcserf: lol
tudude91: im the one who made that
harcserf: ur code sux btw
tudude91: like you can do any bettter?
tudude91: its php
harcserf: ya
harcserf: its got tons of errors
harcserf: i run php
harcserf: http://validator.w3.org/check?verbose=1&uri=http%3A//users.cjb.net/aim/
tudude91: you run shit
tudude91: i tired of your face
harcserf: http://jalenack.com
harcserf: my site
harcserf: how’d u get my sn?
tudude91: im a hacker
harcserf: uhhhh…

And it continued on…Now the bothersome thing was the 4 people he had suckered and gotten their passwords/screennames from, later he said he had gotten 6. The screenname TuDude91 belongs to one of my friends from NYLSC. So I sent him off an e-mail telling him what happened, and advised him to change his password if he still could. Well I got a grateful reply just now saying that he had changed his password…I posted on CodingForums to see if we could bring the site down, but I’ve gotten a lax response. Oh well. Anyway, here’s the link to the FAKE site that you SHOULDN’T write anything into. This kind of reminded me of Pirates of the Caribbean where the British Navy officers say that Johnny Depp is “The worst pirate ever.” So the moral of the story: BE SUSPICIOUS.

Update: His site was taken down by cjb.net and everything is right in the world.
